Since most yards are large and oddly shaped it is often simpler to estimate a large area by breaking it into several smaller areas. Smaller areas are also easier to measure. Look for small sections that can be approximated as a square and rectangular, triangle, or circular area. Keep in mind that you are trying to estimate the size of the area in question. Measurements to the nearest foot or so should be a good start. Once you have the dimensions, enter the information one area at a time. As each area is entered press the “Add this Area” button and the information will be added to the Result box to the right and the total area will be accumulated in the Total Yard Area box.t

Measure a circular area 

Circles are easy to figure out. Remember, a circles radius is half the distance across the middle of the circle. Take the radius of the circle and square it or to make it easier to understand, simply multiple the radius by itself. 6 X 6 = 36 or 6² = 36 Now take that number and multiply it by 3.14. 36 X 3.14 = 113.04 The area of a 10 foot diameter circle is 78.5 Square feet.

A Circle’s area = 3.14 X Radius² 
Measure a square or rectangle area  
Finding the area in a Square or rectangle is simple. Multiply the length by the width. Length X Width = Area 
A rectangle’s area = Lenght X Width 
Measure a triangular area  
In geometry, you have Triangles and Right Triangles. A triangle has at least 2 equal length sides. A right Triangle has a Short, a Medium, and a Long side. That means that one corner has to be square or in others word it must be at a 90° angle. To measure a Right Triangle, take the shortest side and multiply it by the medium length side. 5 X 6 = 30 The area of the triangle is half of that. 30 ÷ 2 = 15 If you have a Triangle, simple divide the Triangle in half and then you will have 2 Right Triangles. Calculate the area of each of the Right Triangles, add them together and then divide by two. 5 X 6 = 30 The area of the triangle is half of that. 30 ÷ 2 = 15 

Now lets add it all up! 

Now we’re ready to add up a real yard, yard shapes vary so you need to calculate all the basic shapes then add them together and subtract the areas that will not be sodded. Draw a map of the area to be sodded. Take lots of measurements. Now use these simple figures to cover your map. Add them all together to get the area of your lawn. If you have an area to be left without grass out in the middle of the lawn (a pool or deck) find its area the same way and subtract it from you total.
